Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach in a self-contained kindergarten and first-grade classroom with differently abled students. My students come to me from diverse backgrounds, and with different experiences. Being a public school in New York City, we are lucky to have many cultures and backgrounds within our school. We are a Title I school of about 1000 children.

My kiddos face learning challenges as well as life challenges, and it is my goal and deepest hope that they are in a classroom where they feel cared for, safe, at home, and free to learn.

Kindergarten and first grade are foundational years, and they are all about exploring and learning, becoming readers, writers, and mathematicians. We spend lots of time learning how to be good people and laughing.

My Project

My special needs kiddos sometimes struggle to understand why their classmates act differently than they do. I can see us sitting in our meeting area, and reading these handpicked books - our book of the week, and then talking about our differences and similarities. The velcro dots, card-stock, and laminating sheets will be used for communication books for kids who have a hard time making requests like the bathroom, water, or food. The magnetic shelves will go on our dry erase easel to hold the books of the week.

I want my students to understand each other, and to know that being different does not mean being less.

The pencil cases will give them a chance to have their own materials for learning. The clips and dots, and charts will be used to be display the work we create after reading our new books. For the past 5 years of my teaching career, I have used my own money to purchase the essentials for my students so they have the same chance as everyone else to learn and grow as students. I thank you in advance for helping us get these much needed supplies.
