Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The Integrated Circuit (IC) and the technology for its design and fabrication represent major long term employment opportunities for my students. Unfortunately, we do not get a chance to address this technology at all during the course of 8th grade Physical Science, even though the fundamentals of the chemistry principles and the physics concepts relevant to IC design and fabrication activities are introduced at this time. I want to change this situation. I want my 8th graders to leave me excited about the prospects of an engineering career in the IC industry and with some basic understanding of electricity, circuits and circuit design. The Lawrence Hall of Science, in conjunction with the National Science Foundation, has developed a kit that is entitled Electronics. This kit, known as a FOSS kit, addresses the following: In this course, students work with electronic components and meters to build simple and complex circuits, measure and monitor electric properties, and discover how different components affect circuits. They make and read schematics, and construct solid-state devices. Finally, they construct meaningful explanations for the powerful interactions taking place in their systems. The kit aligns both to the California Content Standards for science and math. If I could get one of these kits, I would be able to introduce my 90 students to world of electronics and IC's. This would be a fabulous project and I hope that my students would not only gain an appreciation of basic circuits and circuit design, but they will be motivated to stay in school and become both product and process engineers. I teach 8th grade science and math at Hoover School in Redwood City, California. More than 80% of my students are eligible for free or reduced price lunches, so there is not extra money at home for these students to engage in any projects of this kind. The budget is very tight at school and we do not have money to purchase the FOSS kit. Prior to becoming a teacher, I was in industry for 20 years. I know how vital it is for our schools to be actively involved in educating and developing the next generation of scientists and engineers. I also know that most students will not take science or math in high school if they are not sufficiently motivated in 8th grade. This kit will allow me to introduce my kids to electronics and electronics design in a fun and educational way. This kit can be used for many years to come. Thank you for your support of this project.
