My Students

Caution! Sewing is a dying trade. As a middle school teacher who learned to sew from a grandparent, I want all my students to learn the skills involved with sewing to further their artistic talents. Thinking outside the box and creating items that can be used by others are definite incentives for a student that lacks the confidence. I would like to expand their creativity and build on their skills to create things like costumes, wearables, and items for the home. My students definitely have the drive they just need the proper equipment to explore. They have successfully created pin cushions, key chains, and replicated food just to name a few.

My Project

Having the access to sewing machines in my classroom will allow my students to further creativity. Sewing is a skill that they could keep with them. Just think of the satisfaction of cutting a pattern and making a wearable piece of clothing. Many students have no idea what goes into making an article of clothing that they wear every day. Knowing how things are made makes you look at things differently. We have practiced basic hand sewing techniques, but it's time to take it to the next level. While sewing the students utilize math skills such as measurement, geometry, and fractions.
