Did Someone Say Drones?

Help me give my students three Dji Ryze Tello drones. They’ll be a great incentive to set up commands in Scratch and to teach VLOS skills as well!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In the heart of Hialeah, a small town in Miami, there is this small school, PSMS, that would welcome, for the first time, its future drone students- pilots/programmers. This initiative will be offered to those six graders who would like to join our Drone/Coding elective class. PSMS school is a public school that enrolls 88% economically disadvantaged students.

My Project

What wouldn’t be more exciting for a child than flying a drone at school? Students find drones very captivating. These fragile but powerful quadcopters function very similar to those video games our learners often play at home. They already possess the basic skills to fly these devices, yet many students can’t afford to buy these costly devices: PSMS is a public school that enrolls 88% economically disadvantaged students.

Drones have the potential for motivating students to learn concepts from programming, aviation, engineering, robotics, weather, geometry, etc.

Studies show this technology nurtures life skills such as planning, concentration, strategizing, multi-tasking, critical thinking and experimentation, and social skills that would ultimately give our learners an advantage in promising job markets in a near future.

We would love to assist our students in reaching their maximum potential by bringing this enthralling technology to our classrooms. We will be offering two coding/drones, elective classes, next year. A perfect location has been set up for indoor flights. We also have two Tello EDU drones, a drone obstacle course, a net, and 15 laptops for coding. Scratch, the targeted programing language, will be installed on our students' computers.

We are aware this technology is very expensive to acquire, therefore we will try our very best to add more drones to our classroom, but we may have to wait for too long until we have the needed funds for this.

We would love to change our school, after all, technology is already changing our society.
