My Students

What's the saying...give the man a fish and he will eat tonight...teach a man to fish and he will eat for life? I'm teaching my young second graders reference skills they will use a lifetime. They not only learn dictionary skills, but how to use reference materials to further their education.

I teach at a multicultural/high-ability magnet.

Several of my students are bussed in from various areas around the valley because their parents have chosen a quality school for their children. We teachers put in many extra hours to make an enriching curriculum for all our students. Our fantastic parent organization tries its best to raise monies to pay for art, music, and P.E. teachers, too; but this is especially difficult in these economic times.

My Project

In my classroom we do daily vocabulary "research"; and my students feel very "grown-up" looking up definitions, discussing synonyms, and creating "great" sentences. You you should hear the chattering discussion first thing each morning! It still amazes me that children so young can do so much. When I arrived at my school I inherited a small set of dictionaries...that was almost 10 years ago. My gifted second graders must switch between a set of really primary books and a set of outdated upper grade books--neither of which is appropriate for their level. I spend hours each year taping and re-taping the covers of the well-used books... but the spines are starting to give way. I've searched the book room for any additional books, but there is absolutely nothing for these second graders.

New books would advance my students in several ways: - age-appropriate dictionaries - less time taping up covers - words located in one book instead of searching through several books (saves instructional time) - more up-to-date information - less shelf space with only one set - I could donate my old sets to other teachers
