My Students

Learn your language well and command it well, and you will have the first component to life." Edward R. Murrow, American news broadcaster. My students are second language learners and they are learning new vocabulary on a daily basis in history and science.

My sixth graders are a group of 30 rambunctious and eager to learn preteens.

There are 18 talkative girls and 12 athletic boys who love to learn new things everyday. Our school sits in the middle of a very poor area full of turn of the 20th century apartment buildings where entire families live in bachelor apartments. 97% of our students are on free school breakfast and lunch.

My Project

With these dictionaries I envision my students being able to look up new vocabulary words for language arts, ancient history and earth science. Currently, my students receive photocopied pages from my collegiate dictionary for the vocabulary words that they are searching for. The majority of my students do not have Internet access at home and they do not own dictionaries. Therefore, they have to go to the public library if I don't copy the pages.

I know that these dictionaries will help my students learn new vocabulary in all of their subject areas.

The current dictionaries that we are using are elementary school dictionaries therefore many of the new words we are learning are not in those dictionaries. My students need collegiate dictionaries
