Dear Potential Donor, I am a special education teacher at a low socioeconomic school in Canarsie, Brooklyn. While we're stocked with children, my classroom is lacking in basic resource materials. There are presently 22 students in my inclusion classroom and one dictionary that I have provided. While I continue to assign 5 new vocabulary words each week to my third grade students, I write the definitions on the chalkboard and they copy them into their notebooks. During writing activities, my students often ask how to spell words. Though I would prefer to encourage them to sound out the word in question and check their spelling using a dictionary, many of them don't have any experience looking up words. I would love to have a set of 12 hardcover "Dictionaries for Children" to use with my children in small groups so that they may begin to learn how to use this valuable reference source. Lessons on 'guide words' and 'pronunciations' would hold true meaning with hands-on use. Skills could be applied on a daily basis if dictionaries were available to all students for general use in the classroom library. My classroom is also in need of a globe. I brought in a small wooden model of Earth but a REAL globe with lines of latitude, longitude, and marked countries and oceans would be much appreciated. One with tactile 'bumps' showing elevation would be extra-special. Geography is a subject with so much potential as students are interested in the world they live in.
