My Students

Our school is a public, transfer high school that offers internships and in-house classes. Our students are artsy, musical, and curious about the world. They are very into hands-on projects and learning experientially. Our school is also in the consortium, so our students create a portfolio for the graduation of their best projects.

Our talented, brilliant and interesting students often come from schools where they have encountered some type of obstacle in their success.

Our goal is to make projects connect to their world so they can see the importance of learning about science. In our classes, students first learn about the subject and then use what they learned to design their own experiments. The scientific paper they write can be edited multiple times and presented in front of a panel as one of their graduation requirements.

My Project

This cycle I'm excited to be offering the Disease & Medicine class, and the Animal Behavior Class (two of my favorites!). In the Disease & Medicine class, we'll be talking about current events such as the coronavirus.

We'll also be learning about how diseases are diagnosed by practicing using an ELISA test.

An ELISA test is an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, a test that detects and measures antibodies in your blood. This test can be used to determine if you have antibodies related to certain infectious conditions. Don't worry- it's a simulation so no contagious things are used.

For the big project students design themselves, we'll need a bunch of Petri dishes to grow bacteria and fungus. Since I'm also offering 2 sections of the Animal Behavior class, I think we'll need more pillbugs. So many students completed amazing portfolio projects from the pillbug experiments last cycle. I hope to keep the magic going!
