My Students

"If you want to be a writer, you MUST do two things ABOVE all others: READ a lot and WRITE a lot." Stephen King. I want my students to have exposure to many texts with various themes & analyze amazing writing. I want them to want to be adventurous when they write and try new things and have fun!

My students are developing young writers.

They are learning how to craft narrative and memoirs by choosing ideas and themes carefully and then writing their stories from inside the moment so the reader can relate to the story. They are eager to learn and enjoy listening to mentor texts and discussing what the author did well and trying to recreate similar styles in their own writing. The more we read together the more risks my students take as writers.

My Project

These reading resources will be very useful in my classroom. We will use them in an author study. We will read them and sort them according to theme. They will see that themes are large and how smaller ideas fit under them. We will be able to see how stories can fit under more than one theme. This will help my students organize their own ideas under various themes. By reading Polacco's stories my students will see how important it is to choose topics that engage the reader and display particular themes. They will study her use of words and descriptive language that lure a reader into a story and not want to stop until they've reached the end. My students will see that she writes about things that are important to her therefore allowing the words to spill on to the paper. In the end, my students will transfer what they've learned from this amazing author study to their own writing.

Donations to this project will improve my classroom as my students will have access to so many amazing mentor texts to model the writing I am trying to demonstrate for my students.

Being fluid writers is a life long skill which begins with reading, reading, and even more reading. I want to expose them to as many wonderful words as possible and see what they compose as a result.
