Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a special education teacher that works within an integrated class setting, I have the pleasure of working with many exceptional students. My classrooms are diverse settings where students come from many different socioeconomic backgrounds, different levels of academic functioning, and many different racial/ethnic/religious backgrounds. Daily I get to experience the joy of seeing students work together, learn about what makes each other different and special, and see young teenagers grow and develop into civic-minded community members.

However, on their learning journey, many of my students experience struggles with their emotional well-being that affect their abilities to participate fully in the learning experiences that school offers them.

Many of my students are food insecure and rely on the nutrition and snacks provided at school to feed them. My goals for this project are to help my students on their wellness journey by providing fidget toys to help self-regulate difficult emotions, and snacks to meet their physical needs so that they can engage fully in the classroom. While I do not believe that snacks and fidget toys are the only solution to right the issues my students face, it is a tangible and impactful way to improve their school day and learning outcomes.
