My Project

Our students come to kindergarten with varying degrees of social, academic, occupational, physical readiness. As their teacher, it is my job to offer as many opportunities for them to develop the skills necessary to be successful in kindergarten. When a student uses STEM based materials to connect items together to create a structure, they are engaging their small motor muscles, developing the eye-hand coordination, using multiple modalities, senses, learning styles AND strengthening their pincer grasp, finger flexibility and enhancing the muscles in their hands and fingers. These same muscles are necessary for a kindergartener to develop the ability to properly hold a pencil, crayon or marker.

My goal is to help my student strengthen the muscles in their hands and fingers, as well at the muscles in their imagination, confidence, problem solving skills and persistence.

While it might look like "just play" to the layman, we know that when a child uses trial and error to create, they learn that it's ok to make mistakes. They learn from the mistakes and they learn to take risks when trying again. When their fingers are strong, they want to build more, write more, draw more, paint more, engage more. Using STEM based materials is a natural way for four and five year old children to develop these skills through play.
