Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Each morning, we start off the day with dancing and greeting our friends! Our classroom is a very warm, welcoming, and social place but our students on the Autism Spectrum still struggle with social skills. With your donations, we can improve my students' social and play skills!!

Our school district is located in the beautiful Upper West Side of New York City and serves students with significant disabilities.

Over 80% of our school's children qualify for free or reduced lunch. Our classroom is home to 6 highly energetic 2nd and 3rd graders diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The students are happy and eager to learn every day! As they learn to play and socialize with their peers, they struggle with understanding how their peer is feeling or appropriate ways to handle certain social situations. Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder display deficits in social interaction and play skills.

My Project

Using a GoPro, the students and I can videotape real-life social interactions in the classroom, on the playground, at lunch, and during gym. Then, we can replay these videos on the SmartBoard to better understand the social situation and a good strategy to use in the future. By watching the videos of the students in their natural environments, the students can answer questions like, "How is he feeling right now?" or "He looks sad. Why do you think he's sad?" They can also watch videos of themselves not handling a social situation in an appropriate manner and answer a question, such as "What would have been a better way of dealing with the girl taking your toy?" The possibilities are endless when using this technology in the classroom!!

Students on the Autism Spectrum struggle to understand social situations and cues.

By videotaping and watching themselves as well as their friends in their common environment, they will improve and develop their emotional and social literacy.
