My Students

My 4th and 5th graders are rambunctious warrior-scholars who persevere through many social, economic, and emotional struggles and trauma in order to be taken seriously in the broader societal academic conversation. My students have been marginalized, underserved and disengaged in their schooling experiences prior to coming to our school. I work hard to spark the minds that will change the world. These Warrior-Scholars will make the difference because they matter, and are ready to prove it. They light up when they get to engage in hands on projects, and shine brightest when challenged to step up and perform, present, or become leaders.

My Project

Accessing technology and other quality resources is a challenge for our students. Developing Literacy skills is a huge emphasis at our campus. Many students have requested a number of book titles that we have not been able to invest in. On top of that, Digital Literacy is another access issue that continues to keep our students out of the technology loop. This project aims to address these concerns with a few iPads.

Having a few iPads will allow students to have access to applications that will enhance and engage our students to develop their literacy skills.

The kindle app will allow students to access a digital library that I already have, giving them a wide array of eBooks, comics, manga, and graphic novels. On top of that, students can create their own stories and comics on Pixton using the technology. The iPads will also allow for stations for students to work on their digital literacy and competencies by participating in "Hour of Code", Scratch, LightBot, and other block coding apps and programs. The iPads will also allow students to program robots in our robotics unit by accessing the corresponding apps that go with our: Lego Mindstorms and NXT kits, Sphere Minis, and MakeBit micro computers.

The iPads will also be used to take pictures, video and voice record, design, and create projects. We can have students record themselves reading aloud to inform parents, allow the students to see their fluency, and create read alouds for the class or others. Other apps like Canva would be used to design posters for the class and school centering on things, but not limited to: powerful vocabulary, informational and uplifting posters, shared community and school values in the eyes of the students, and much more.

With just a few iPads, your contribution will matter!
