My Students

Have you struggled in school or maybe know someone who has? My goal is to get my students to perform on or as close to grade level as possible. One step at a time, I strive to help my students to become better communicators and achieve overall academic success.

I am a speech and language teacher, working with K-5th graders.

My students present with a wide range of abilities and disabilities. Some of my students are non-verbal, while others have learning disabilities which inhibit their ability to do well in school. Our team of special educators use students' strengths (such as drawing, singing, or acting), highly motivating material, and visual aids to make learning fun and help students retain learned information.

My Project

My students need the fiction and nonfiction text we will have access to with class subscriptions to the newsmagazines Scholastic News and TIME for Kids, timers, and comprehension games to address their speech and language delays. My students will use nonfiction and fiction text to practice reading comprehension strategies in the therapy room, so that they may better understand grade-level work in the classroom. The visual timers will help my students stay focused. I will also be using the timers to give my students breaks, as many of my students may only be able to attend for brief periods of time. I will be using the educational comprehension and language games to further address communication delays. It has been shown through research that children learn best through hands-on activities and play. I hope that these highly stimulating tools will help my students to become better communicators with their peers and in their natural environments.

Your donations will make a big difference to the students who have a hard time focusing, to the students who are only using one or two words to express their needs, to the students who simply cannot make sense of the text presented, and to those students who may appear to be socially awkward because they have yet to learn communication strategies that come naturally to you and me.
