Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How do you prepare students for jobs not even thought of yet?

My students are those who rely on school for stability, support, and motivation.

In many economically disadvantaged homes where these students come from, learning gets put on the back burner while survival steps up. Minimal parental involvement (due to multiple jobs or incarceration) causes these students to fall behind, which may possibly deter their graduation from High School. Most of these students speak Spanish as their native language, and they are tackling the challenges of learning a new language on top of new concepts in school. The classrooms lack class sets of science materials to conduct engaging labs. The school is on the rise from being labeled "Acceptable" and to get these students where they need to be, they need to be motivated to learn.

My Project

I've requested basic lab materials that meet first grade standards in the state of Texas. There are lab materials for physical, earth, and life science concepts. For example, several sets of magnets will allow the students to investigate different objects for magnetism. A K'nex set will allow them hands-on exploration of how gears and axles interact to create a working product. "Growing" a frog will help them see the life cycle of amphibians first-hand.

How does a teacher prepare disadvantaged students to compete for and be successful in jobs not even thought of?

Especially in a technological driven world, jobs of the future will call for strong math and science skills that need to be learned and tested. Hands on labs, thorough lessons, and student curiosity will help students at an early age to understand why objects work the way they do. This will help them problem solve to create new technology, inventions, and/or medical advances.
