Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have supporting parents but with very limited funds. My school is a Title I school where all of my kiddoes (100%) are on free/reduced-price lunch. At this time, some are virtual learners and others in-person learners with new systems to get used to, which both present even more challenges than usual.

Although they have many more obstacles than other students with individual special needs, my kids are full of energy and so eager to learn and explore all that the world has to offer.

They anxiously look forward to fun, innovative ways to learn and get excited with materials that make learning more concrete and fun. They love doing activities where they get to push themselves to achieve more, take ownership of their own learning, and are hands-on. It's so amazing to watch them make goals and to see their faces light up when after so much practice and hard work, they have finally met them.

My Project

All of the materials requested will be used by my students to focus and engage their learning in my special needs classroom.

With the individual needs of my students, we approach learning from many different angles and try to target multiple learning styles like hands on, kinesthetic, auditory, or visual rich approaches.

I support concrete and effective learning by providing them with lots of visuals and concrete objects or materials they can hold and manipulate to understand math.

Some of these materials (like the books, timers, stress/fidget manipulatives) will also help my students work on developing their executive skills, like time management, mindfulness, focus, and recognizing/handling their emotions.

Other materials (like face shields that don't pull on your ears, and hooks for the students to keep their face masks accessible), also help in a more basic level to meet the needs and ease my students' focus away from the current COVID situation we are going through and allow them to focus on their learning.
