My Students

I teach an exciting, motivated, and creative group of fifth-grade students. My student population is very diverse. I have some who are working below grade level, while others need to extend their thinking and apply the skills they have mastered in meaningful ways.

My students enjoy coming to school each day and learning from each other.

They use their critical-thinking skills to ask good questions and analyze information. They want to know about our community and how they can have a positive impact on it.

My Project

I am requesting a clear card mat to help my students develop media literacy skills. I have many students who are new to the United States in my class. They are just in the process of learning English, and so deciphering a text at the 5th grade level is difficult for them. I want to use the clear card mat as a game board to help them master media literacy skills. They will use this mat to play vocabulary games to help them learn what the words mean. They will also use this mat to create games with text features, such as what is an index, caption, glossary, table of contents and more.

Through these games, my students will develop the skills they need in order to process complex text.

These games will also help build their reading confidence.
