This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Many teachers face the same problem: a lack of resources provided by the school. While our Reading Resource room is filled with many excellent novel choices, frequently they are lost or checked out by another teacher. It would be nice to have series of my own, and not have to share them with anyone.
I teach the fourth grade gifted class at a Title 1 school.
These students are of a low socioeconomic statue and don't have the resources or the support at home to help them become life-long readers, or even just someone who can appreciate a story that completely envelopes you into another world. I am lucky enough to have a small amount of students who already have developed a love of reading. For those that haven't though, I always want to give them a text that spoke to me as a child, and often times I can't find it or it's unavailable.
My Project
Having these series in the classroom would allow me to give my students the opportunity to read and explore stories together that are academically sound, on their levels, and have stood the test of time through the children's literature world. It would also ensure that they would always have them to come back to because they wouldn't have to be shared with anyone else.
There is nothing more important in a classroom than a classroom library; a solid and safe back-up to every completion of an activity, every early finisher, every down moment or transition time, every rainy day recess, every silent lunch, and more...it's there.
With the way our society is moving through technological advances at a lighting speed, to me, the look, feel, and even smell of a book is becoming that much more important.
