My Project

Over the last 5 years, I have seen a growing number of students in my art classroom who have fine motor and cognitive deficiencies, such as attention, learning, perception, memory, and discrimination.

My students no longer start school with a skill set that prepares them to face the challenges and rigors they will have in the regular classroom or the art room.

For example, many of my kindergarten students are not familiar with using scissors and several come to school without the pre-writing skills necessary for the classroom and the creation of art.

I have been working to expand my own knowledge to help support these students. I want to make sure I am providing my students with the skills, tools, and experiences they need no matter what their ability level is. Art can be and often is a fun and engaging way for students to develop lifelong skills. Expanding my fine motor tools and resources to help better include students with lower fine motor skills I hope to create a more engaging environment for my students to develop their skills. This way as they move forward in their education they are better prepared for the challenges ahead.
