Emotional regulation is the ability to manage one's emotions in response to internal or external stimuli. It is an essential skill for coping with stress, overcoming challenges, and achieving goals. Many students struggle with emotional regulation for many reasons including, trauma, mental health issues, learning disabilities, and/or environmental stressors. These individuals may experience difficulties in expressing, understanding, and controlling their emotions.
Expressive art therapy uses art-making as a therapeutic process.
It can help student develop and enhance emotional regulation by providing them with an outlet for their emotions, a way to communicate their feelings, and a means to explore and resolve their emotional conflicts. Expressing oneself through art can also foster creativity, self-awareness, and self-expression, which are all important skills for learning and success in life.
Some of the activities we will explore include:
-Drawing or painting what one is feeling (with the help of an emotions chart). This can help students to identify, label and express their emotions in a safe and constructive way. It can also help them to recognize the triggers, causes, and consequences of their emotions while practicing a coping skill to manage them.
-Creating a collage or mixed-media piece using images, words, or symbols that represent one's emotions, thoughts, or experiences. This can help students integrate and organize their emotions while finding meaning and coherence in their emotional narratives. It can also help them explore different perspectives, themes, or patterns in their emotions and to discover new insights or solutions to their problems.
-Making a sculpture or model using clay, wood, or other materials that reflect one's emotions, personality, or identity. This can help students express their emotions in a tangible way, and to gain a sense of control and mastery over their feelings. It can also help them to develop a positive self-image.
