Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a small middle school in Downtown Los Angeles. Most students are from socioeconomically challenged communities, and may be the first in their families to attend college someday. Middle school is a rough time, as most of us know, and it is our jobs as teachers, to not only teach them through subject matter, but also guide them through the intricacies of these middle grades.

One of the biggest challenges in our society today is that students are not reading enough outside of school; there is a big focus on technology and social media, but not on the development of a love for reading.

In order to develop a love of reading, students, first and foremost, need books they WANT to read. I want my students to have a selection of books that are relevant to them, that are interesting to them, and that don't ask for them to read deeply for enjoyment. This project is to foster a love for reading, which may in turn inspire a lifetime appreciation of reading books.

My Project

This project will bring 20+ books to my classroom that are at grade level and are interesting to read. The more variety they have to choose from, the more likely the students are to find something (or more than one) that they will enjoy reading, and potentially guide them on the path to becoming people who like to read!

I often hear my students, and many young people who are not my students, say that they don't read because there are supposedly no books worth reading!

I would like to solve that problem by bringing more books into my classroom that I know are good books, with strong messages, themes, and characters.
