My Students

My students come from a variety of ethnic, socioeconomic, and geographical backgrounds. We all live in Upcountry, Maui. Some students live up on the mountainside of Haleakala, while others can walk across the street from their house to the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean.

As a Title 1 school, many of our students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

That said, I am continuously impressed with the way they show up and try their best. For many, our school is more than just a source of education and learning, but a place where their needs can be provided for.

My Project

My students are still sitting on the same chairs that were at the school since far before I began teaching here over 10 years ago. The chairs are your standard yellow classroom chair from decades ago. Some chairs are cracked, some feet are missing and wobbly, most are scratched or written on, all are uncomfortable for students. We recently received new desks/tables from the school, but our chairs are in desperate need of an update. The transition from at home/hybrid/covid learning back into a full school environment is a perfect time to update my classrooms to welcome them back!

I believe that providing my students with clean, new chairs will help them to take more value in their learning and their classroom.

They will feel appreciated, and not just having to "take what they get" when it comes to the seat they will be using for the entirety of the time they are in my class. Unlike the traditional yellow classroom chair, these chairs have a modern look. They are sturdy and will better support students and help them be able to focus on their learning.
