I am beginning my ninth year of teaching at an elementary/middle school in the South Bronx. I will be preparing 20 4th graders not only for the upcoming state exams but also to become students who think critically and analyze situations.
As fourth graders, they will be required to have different school supplies from when they were third graders. For example, the students will be expected to respond to reading selections, gather ideas for writing assignments, participate in inquiry-based science lessons and record their thoughts about math assignments so they will need composition books in addition to looseleaf binders. They will be writing in pen for most subjects and pencil for math. They will be learning how to edit their work and the work of their peers so they will require red pens.
In addition to having younger siblings who require supplies, many of the students have older siblings who require even more in the way of school supplies. This makes the task of purchasing all of the necessary supplies for the beginning of the school year difficult for many of the parents in our school community. Many of the parents work in low-paying jobs which also hampers their ability to purchase many of the necessary supplies.
I am asking for your assistance in getting the school year off to a successful start for my fourth graders. Some of the school supplies being requested are: composition books, red pens, hi-liters, pencils, pencil sharpeners, erasers, looseleaf paper, folders, construction paper, glue sticks, dry erase markers, and tape.
These supplies will enable all of the students to begin working at the start of the school year. It will also put all of the students on an equal footing in terms of supplies. They won't have to worry about not having supplies, they will be able to concentrate on having a successful school year.
