My Students

My students come from all over New York; each student coming with a different story, challenge, obstacle but one dream - to be successful and learn. Unfortunately many of my students live in poverty stricken households where basic school supplies are simply unaffordable.

I teach 9th grade English in a high poverty urban high school in New York.

Our school budget cuts have been devastating. Our budget does not allow for classroom supplies or new text books. So student supplies like paper, pencils, or folders are simply out of the question. I have a very challenging job, but I have the greatest job in the world. Every day I get to work with struggling adolescents who dream of better days. I do everything I can to help them achieve their dreams. But, without basic supplies, it seems impossible that any of their dreams will ever be a reality.

My Project

The families of my students are unable to supply their student with basic school supplies, but that does not mean students can go without these supplies. If this proposal is to be funded, each student would have a notebook, file folder, daily pencils, and daily loose leaf paper. Students would keep the notebooks in the classroom to be used everyday for class work, notes, group work, and creative writing. The notebook would become a personal artifact for 9th grade English. Additionally the notebook could be used to study for future State Regents Exams and A.P Exams in their junior and senior year. The file folder would be used as a writing portfolio, and could later be used as an artifact during college and scholarship interviews.

I do not believe students should be punished for living in poverty.

Not being able to afford a notebook to use in school is being punished. I stand against students being able to use poverty as a reason for their lack of success. I strongly believe that given the proper materials, and motivation my students have the ability to change the world. Thank you for your time and generosity and for helping my students’ dreams come true, it means so much to me and ultimately them.
