I teach in a very cool old building, that happens to be round. The first grade has large recangular tables. When I had 13 students, we could make it work, but now that I have 22, there is no room. The side walls are angled, the window and sink walls are curved. The rooms are small. One wall is a lovely accordian wall divider.
Individual desks would allow me to save some space, rearrange as needed, and have some storage.
Our table do none of that. We are squished! Our school has zero budgeted for furniture. I want to be able to walk around and check on work and help when needed. Right now, no one can walk around when students are sitting. I want the students to learn how to be organized, to respect others' space and to work with different groups throughout the year.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
