My Project

Students receive occupational therapy to access their school environments and participate successfully. During their sessions, they work on goals related to writing, classroom tool use, sensory processing, organization skills, and self-help skills.

As the starting point for successful participation, students require a well-fitted desk and chair to work in.

The furniture measurements must correspond to the child's height and posture. Occupational Therapists are trained to evaluate these ergonomic characteristics, and provide adjustments as needed for each child's build.

Unfortunately, school furniture is often problematic in that it is damaged and/or misfitted. In our current OT Room, one of our two desks wobbles during use since one leg is shorter than the others. Additionally, the surface is rough at various edges, which is an uncomfortable place to rest the arm and hand while working. Additionally, its height cannot accommodate students of varying ages and needs.

For this project, I hope to provide my students with a most comfortable and customizable work space. The chair and table can be adjusted to the child's height. The slanted desktop will support proper vision during reading. It will allow effective wrist and finger position during writing and tool use. The rounded and smooth furniture edges will remain soft to the touch, while the children cozily sit and work. The slide-out tray will provide efficient storage for necessary supplies. The LED lamp will provide touch control for light customization according to sensory and visual needs. All these features will create warmth and comfort for students so that they can joyfully complete work according to their academic objectives.
