My Students

As an Integrated co-teaching classroom (ICT) located just outside of New York City, my classroom is comprised of students with various learning styles and abilities. Some of my students have special needs, some have learning disabilities, and some are general education students with individual needs as well.

The one commonality amongst all my students is their hunger for learning.

Regardless of what life has thrown at them recently, they continue to strive to be the best students they can be. Our school motto is “Build a bridge, change the world!” and I need to give them the tools to do that.

My Project

As an ICT classroom with both general education and special education students, you would never know who has which classification in my class because all of my students are hard workers and critical thinkers. They have transitioned with little to no advance notice from hybrid learning, to fully remote learning (sometimes for several weeks at a time), and then to full in-person learning without a complaint or a missed beat and they continue to excel - they are amazing!

I need to help my 2nd graders find comfort in these uncertain times while also helping them feel as though the things they do are important, that they matter!

As the end of the year approaches and the weather begins to warm up, staying on task and motivated becomes more difficult. Incorporating "Desk Pets" into our classroom will absolutely give them the motivation they need! "Desk Pets" is not just a reward, but will also provide them with the opportunity to learn how to take care of and nurture a pet, in addition to giving them some comfort and stability in these uncertain times they are navigating. Their good behavior and ability to remain on task will help them to earn special items such as a pet (eraser), a home (plastic container), food (more erasers), blankets (cut fabric), grass (turf), and toys (more erasers) for their pet. I believe our "Desk Pets" Project will be a win-win to wrap up a crazy school year!!
