My Students

My students are amazing! They come with tenacity, creativity, and a wide variety of experiences and gifts. We work hard every day as scholars, artists, critical thinkers, and friends. Together we imagine new possibilities for our community, our country, and the world.

At our school, 96% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and 92% of the students are students of color.

My students have come from many different parts of the world including Ecuador, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Ethiopia, Somalia, and the United States. The majority of my students are learning English as a second or third language.

My students are the engineers, pilots, dentists, poets, and architects of the future. These students have the capacity to achieve greatness.

My Project

Every year my students and I implement a classroom economy. This includes jobs, earning money and paying rent for their seats. After paying rent my students purchase special privileges or items from our classroom store. They love earning and spending, and I love teaching them about budgeting and job responsibility. This year, I'd like to add something new: desk pets. Desk pets are small animal erasers.

Desk pets will enhance my students' classroom economy experience and they will take great joy in caring for their little eraser creatures.

At the beginning of the year, my students will have the opportunity to choose their very own desk pets. These desk pets will live in their "habitats" that students will keep on their desks. After choosing their initial desk pet, students will be able to purchase (with their classroom money) food, blankets (the felt), beds (cotton balls), habitat decorations (stickers) and other accessories for their desk pets. Students will study and write about the habitat of their desk pet.

I'm so excited to start desk pets with my students. It will be motivating and engaging. Thank you for considering our project.
