Desk Cycle - Let's Move!

My students need 3 Desk Cycles so they can pedal and learn. My students will focus while pedaling. My students will stay in shape and increase physical fitness.

My Students

Can I go to the bathroom? I hear this question at least 10 times a day. I teach 6th graders at a middle school. Although many students do need to use the restroom during class time, I believe many students are simply getting up and asking to leave the room briefly because they need to move!

120 middle school students come in and out of my classroom each day.

They are your typical students who are curious, social and on the go. Our school is filled with a variety of students from many different backgrounds. It is a middle class, rural school with many students with sensory needs. I am seeing an increase in the number of students who cannot sit and learn in the traditional desks that have been part of our school for the past 30 years.

My Project

The desk cycles will impact over 100 students each day. All students will have the opportunity to use these when they are involved in seat activity. There are so many times when students need to sit and read, and having desk cycles to keep these busy feet moving would be amazing. Daily as I circulate in my classroom I see constant legs tapping, seat bouncing, and random standing. Giving those students who need an outlet while reading will increase achievement. They can ride and cycle while doing their work.

The two main benefits of the desk cycles will be improved student achievement and physical fitness.

Students can exercise while doing seat work. This will improve class distractions of having students getting in and out of their seat, and moving around the classroom. I can picture the satisfaction on my students' faces when they track their progress, and celebrate their pedaling achievements. What a motivator for them! I am confident students will stay focused and work more diligently.
