Designing Justice: A Restorative Space for Students

Help me give my students a restorative space with a sofa, comfy chairs like an egg chair, tatami floor cushions and a low floor table, a beautiful washable rug, and inspiring yet calming lighting.

My Project

This school year, I will be looping up to 4th grade with my former 3rd grade class. Upon reflection, I have come to realize that my students really need physical space within the classroom to have restorative conversations that help us work through conflict, to get cozy and lounge around during those more passing learning moments (i.e. independent reading and writing), or even just to have a place to relax and decompress when life and learning feel like too much. In far fewer words, my students were trying to communicate this to me last year with their actions - - they were making nests out of old snow gear, tipping over desks to make cozy reading spots, bringing chairs to the rug, and finding other creative ways to alter their space for maximum comfort during learning and restorative conversations.

Restorative practices help build conflict resolution skills and repair rifts in relationships in ways that old-fashioned classroom behavior management just cannot.

We circle up quite a bit in my class when the need arises to have a restorative conversation. A big part of running a classroom with a restorative mindset is being willing to move furniture and circle up time and time again. Well, I would like to just go ahead and build the space using a sofa, comfy chairs, and floor cushions! And when we are not using this space to have restorative conversations or discuss rich concepts, students will have the space to decompress and get cozy.

Help me surprise my class with a gorgeous restorative space designed for justice and learning!
