Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In 5th grade, we have units that cover social studies and science. For instance, in science, we study the properties of matter, chemical reactions, and ecosystems. In social studies, we learn about local native Americans, the 13 colonies, the American Revolution, and the founding of a new nation. Students will showcase their combined learning and content knowledge by designing and building their own board games using DIY kits and Sharpies.

Asking my students to cooperatively build a board game centered around their social studies and science frameworks for learning will help them synthesize and explain their gained understanding in a fun and engaging fashion, without the stress of writing comparative essays.

These board games will include academic vocabulary and content-specific themes that support the overall fun and rules of their games. Students will work collaboratively in teams to design these board games, using teamwork strategies and cooperation to successfully make their game as exciting as possible.
