My Students

We are a small rural school district located in the northernmost reaches of New York State. We are nestled in the foothills of the Adirondacks, and on the shore of the Saint Lawrence, as well as the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation. Thanks to Title VII and the Johnson O’Malley federally-funded programs, our school district provides educational enrichment programming for its Mohawk student population, which comprises 63 percent of the total school enrollment.

This STEM focus design tube sculpture lesson utilizes important skills including: patience, perseverance, imagination, problem solving, fine motor skills, and adaptability.

Every year the students love this lesson especially since it's a challenge and a contest. They compete for most creative, tallest, and architecturally strong.

My Project

It's amazing what you can do with just paper, glue and Sharpies! I've been doing this lesson multiple times a year over the past 3 years and there's not one project that is the same. Students learn important skills such as patience, perseverance, imagination, problem solving, fine motor skills, and adaptability. They are engineers, mathematicians, and artists.

The students use pencils then Sharpies to draw the designs on the heavy paper to create their bases.

Once their base is complete they make multiple copies of the base with the Xerox machine to create their tubes. Elmer's glue or glue sticks are applied to the tubes to seal them and to build. Some students have added tissue paper for extra elements for the Most Creative category. I have found that pouring the liquid glue into air tight containers and applying the glue with Q-tips or brushes is the easiest and most efficient way of using glue.
