Design 101: Math in the Real World

My Students

My students are an amazing group of hard working kids. They love to question, and make connections. As their teacher, I try to help them understand how our curriculum works in the real world.

It is easy to teach students how to work a math problem, but more difficult to show them how to use that math outside of class.

I want to give my students the opportunity to explore their creativity while learning about how finances work in a cottage, or start up business.

My Project

Students will work in teams to creatively design a school shirt. They will use the computer along with the Cricut Electronic Cutter to make their design. I will assist in ironing the finished design onto a t-shirt. The teams will then create an "advertising" poster. The posters, along with the shirts, will be hung in the hallway for other students to vote on. The three finalist designs will be presented to our principal as a potential design for an upcoming school shirt. The finance side of the project will come into play with the designing. Each group will be given an amount of "start up" money. Depending on how many colors they use, or what type of vinyl, the cost will change. If they use words, their will be a charge per letter. Their "advertising" poster will also have to figure into their budget. The students will have to figure out a retail price for their shirts weighing the amount of profit they would like to make with a realistic amount people would pay. It is my hope that the students will finish this project with knowledge of how math is used in a cottage, or start up, business.
