A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
This year I started at a new school because I saw so many Desi students attending. I started the Desi club because I barely saw myself in my education in all of my years as a student or in the faces of my teachers.
In my near 17 years as a teacher I never taught Desi literature.
When I went to order books from Desi authors for this club, there was an extremely limited selection. With these books, I hope to build a South Asian Literature curriculum, but more importantly have my Desi students see themselves in all the ways I didn't get to see myself because I learned about other peoples' history and stories.
With the Desi Club, we are learning about and celebrating our history and culture so that we know who we are, where we came from, and where we are going.... and to help strengthen that would be through stories.
