My Students

Hands on experiential learning and exploration promote not only engaged students, but provide students real life experiences to which they can apply their learning.

My students are hard working, high achieving Boston kids.

They are majority low income and of color. Since an early age our school has been a place for them to learn and grow, and also to participate in rich learning experiences. Our school revels in providing hands on experiences as means to further learning and promote active engagement.

My Project

Density seems to be a simple idea - some things float, others do not. However, to deeply understand the underlying concepts, and meet the state standards, my kids needs to see density at work. They need to investigate and explore different substances and how they interact. Aquarium tanks provide a large setting in which multiple objects can be observed at once. They also allow viewing large enough for an entire class at once. One such investigation involves a can of regular coca cola and a can of diet coke - they appear to be the same, but the coca cola can sinks and the diet coke can does not. Even when 6 diet coke cans are taped together, they will still float! This investigation hooks kids into density from the start - it makes them want to learn more and provides a context in which they can apply what they learn. Obviously we need large tanks to provide this learning experience - which is where the aquarium tanks come into play!

Donations that will allow my classroom to obtain these tanks will provide endless opportunities for my students to explore the deep underlying concepts related to density, while sparking interest for further learning.
