This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

5th grade math has many abstract concepts – everything from fractions to elapsed time to classifying triangles based upon both angles and lengths of sides. We are coming out of year two of both online and in-person learning, so we need multiple ways to make connect with prior learning and to build upon what students already know. Manipulatives are a great way to build upon that learning and a way to build student confidence in math because they provide a way for students to model their thinking.

The hands-on manipulatives from this project will help to solidify the abstract 5th grade math concepts, help the students talk about math, and encourage students to become active learners.

Students will be able to build different types of angles and measure them; by doing this, they will use their academic language to talk about the types of angles and then types of triangles. The protractors will help with the AnglLegs that students build and with measuring angles that students find around both the classroom and campus. The geometric nets will help students understand the concept of volume by allowing them construct, and deconstruct, the three-dimensional object and fill that object. The clocks are important because students will be able to correlate an analog clock to a number line. Many students do not know an analog clock, so by exposing them to the analog clock and making that connection, they can better understand the concept of elapsed time.
