My Students
My students are curious, energetic, and trying to navigate being back in the school building for the first time in a very long time. Throughout the adjustments and struggles, my students find ways to push through and turn their creativity back on. After spending over a year with their faces on a computer screen, my students are once again learning how to be safe, be respectful, and be productive in a shared school studio space. I already see those with a passion for art starting to blossom, and those who don't have that passion yet are getting more comfortable taking risks when making art.
My Project
To make demonstrations and live visual supports more accessible, I am requesting an easel and whiteboard! The art classroom used to be a science room, so some of the build in resources are not suited for art lessons and demonstrations. In my classroom, there is one chalkboard that is covered in adhesive residue that is very far away from the student tables. In my classes, I primarily use a smart screen. On this screen I display the current task, any visual supports such as art examples and process images, and the objective for the day. I often switch away from these supports to show demonstrations with a document camera and/or write with the 'annotations feature' which takes down the current task and objective, which is often helpful for students to see at all times. I also have found the annotations feature challenging with younger kids that become fixated on coming up and touching the screen. With an easel I will be able to prop up my large pad of paper, an art board, and a white board for multiple modes of demonstration and visual support. I am also requesting magnets to hang examples and relevant materials on the board and a paper cutter to cut down on paper waste.
