'Dem Bones 'Dem Bones...

My students need 7 materials to give them hands-on experience exploring the skeletal system: its components, articulation, and pathologies.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Nothing has such power to broaden the mind as the ability to investigate systematically and truly all that comes under thy observation in life." - Marcus Aurelius. My Anatomy/Physiology students have no laboratory materials with which to investigate the workings and structure of the human body.

My Anatomy/Physiology students are college bound eleventh and twelfth graders attending a unique K-12, which is high poverty and high minority.

Most of them are taking this college preparatory course as an option, not a requirement. They are determined to overcome the "neighborhood expectations" and succeed in college. However, due to the economy, my school has had severe budget cuts. There is no funding for this course and as it hasn't been offered previously, we have no laboratory materials for my students to use. We are constrained to bookwork. Would you want your future doctor to have learned only from a book with no hands-on experiences? These are bright students who want to break out of the stereotype and yet they have not had much opportunity to truly experience science. For example, their seventh grade science classes didn't even meet in a room. They were given packets of worksheets and sat in a hall with a substitute teacher. Help them gain lab experience.

My Project

These resources will give my students critically needed hands-on experience exploring the skeletal system. The prepared slides will allow them to become familiar with, investigate, and compare skeletal structure at the microscopic level. The pellets will enable them to construct articulated skeletons economically. While the bones are not human, they are mammalian and my students will be able to take separate skeletal pieces and construct their own free-standing models like museum pieces. We will move beyond my pointing at a chart and saying "the leg bone's connected to the knee bone!" The "Sherlock Bones" kit is designed for an introduction to forensic skeletal investigation. It will provide us with a disarticulated model of a human skeleton that can be used year after year as part of our studies. With Sherlock Bones, my students will identify and assess skeletal indicators as well as apply mathematical analysis to their investigation. The calipers are for measurement purposes.

Study after study has shown that hand-on experiences in science make the difference in student success.

My students have not been offered the opportunity in the past. Through these experiences I hope to send them to college prepared with the skills they will need to be successful in their chosen science related fields. Without this chance, they will have a harder struggle. Help fulfill my students' dreams of a better life.
