Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm an educator in a Title I school in the Bronx. Our school is comprised of many students that are first and second generation immigrants as well as students with disabilities. While we have students that come from very hard-working and decent families, we also educate a population of students that come from homes stricken by poverty and dysfunction. I educate students with disabilities whose disabilities are often compounded by their living situation. My students disabilities vary from Autism to Emotionally Disturbed, but these are just labels. I want my students to defy every label that has been assigned and/or implied because of their circumstances.
My students inspire me to be better every day because they are amazing and are deserving of my absolute best!
They are curious, motivated to learn, and hard workers despite the hardships that they face. They educate me as much I do them! My goal is to have my students recognize that they should never limit their potential and their future does not need to be determined by their circumstances.
My Project
My students need literacy, math, and writing resources that will help build up their skills for success. All of these materials will help my students make progress throughout the year. The Scholastic Weekly News Reader and Science Spin will engage my students in authentic non-fiction text that will expose them to global information thus allowing them to become critical thinking world citizens. The math and literacy games will help them build on the foundational skills that they very much need to access the content that they are taught in fourth grade during skills practice.
Help my students defy the labels that at times hinders their belief in themselves and that many people often allow to blind them to the potential and capacity of not only my students, but others as well.
Your generosity will help fund engaging literacy and mathematical classroom materials, as well as a color printer that will be used for many classroom projects like our vision boards. This past year, my students created vision boards for their life. I wanted them to envision their future and to begin thinking about the goals they needed to set to allow their vision come to fruition. They searched for images that fit their vision and we later celebrated with parents, peers and administrators our vision for our lives. I want my students to defy their labels in every which way and to never limit their potential; a dream for the future is the beginning to shedding limits. All of the resources that I am requesting are engaging, hands-on and include activities that foster group work. Help me, help them make their dreams a reality by giving me access to tools that I know will make a difference in their academic, mental and emotional progress this year.
