My Students

Living in New York City, waiting is part of our culture. Whether it is at the DMV, the grocery store, or at restaurants, we have grown accustomed to waiting. My students are well acquainted with this waiting game, as their patience is tried every day waiting to use a laptop we currently have.

My fifth grade students are INSATIABLE!

They are curious by nature and love to be challenged. They question EVERYTHING and they are never satisfied with my answers. Many times, the answers I provide is not enough and they want to delve deeper. However, they are not always able to do so due to the limited technology resources we have in our classroom. Through the integration of computer technology in the classroom setting, my students will be able to have new authentic and meaningful learning experiences. Having these laptops will not only give them access to information, but more importantly, it will give them access to the kind of learning that extends far beyond what books and their teacher can afford them.

My Project

In our school, the teachers are advocates for project-based learning and technology. However, with the computers we currently have, this task seems impossible. Consequently, students need outside sources to gather information needed. Yet this is not what project-based learning is. At the heart of project-based learning lies research; researching proper information together. With these laptops, we could implement project-based learning accordingly and support students in utilizing their prior knowledge. Peer collaboration is also an important aspect of learning our school promotes. Students work in groups as well as partnerships to solve problems. There is no bigger reward than to watch the level of engagement students have when working together and being a part of their "Aha!" moments. Through this collaborative work, students will learn that problems can be solved using multiple methods. These laptops will allow for students to have a medium by which to share their learning.

Technology is inescapable.

One of the advantages of using technology in the classroom is its flexibility and adaptability in differentiated learning. Finding ways to keep students engaged in what they are learning is a challenge teachers are faced with every day. Using technology in the classroom encourages students to be more active participants in their learning. It promotes autonomy and creates a student-centered environment where students drive their learning and the teacher facilitates.
