Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
Every year I get a few students in my third grade class who have a lot of trouble with spelling, reading and letter sound knowledge. Many times these students are not my English Learners. Yet they are missing skills that they should have acquired in First Grade. Most parents of students who struggle are aware that their children find it hard to read and get easily frustrated. Parents don't know how to support them.
I would like to create a parent workshop series for families of struggling students who are missing English phonics.
In order to help parents practice needed skills with their children in a less stressful way I want to give them magnetic letters and word games. The games I chose allow students to practice what they are learning at school. The games are quick and require no preparation. Parents can take 5 minutes each day to play the games. Repetion of phonics skills are essential for students who have dissabilities as they often have difficulty with memory as well. The magnetic letters are also a fun way to practice spelling words, leave notes to each other and play school. Hopefully, this will help motivate both the children and their family to keep learning.
I would like to do a 3 series workshop. The first workshop will be about what skills students need and helping parents understand why their students have difficulty with reading. I will give out some of the Splash games at this time and teach them how to use them. The second workshop will be about using the magnetic letters with students to promote play with phonics in a quick and non stressful way. The third workshop will be about what to do next with students after they learn their sounds and CVC words.
