Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from over 20 countries and speak a dozen languages. They come to the United States to learn English and for an opportunity for a better life. We help them achieve this by teaching them how to solve problems by collaborating with one another on meaningful, hands-on group projects.

My whole career, I have been fortunate enough to work in the most supportive, collaborative, and reflective school I can imagine.

Every teacher is willing to listen and work with everyone else to improve how we teach. We teach English through the content courses one finds in any high school - humanities, history, math, art, and the subject I teach - science. Every year, I keep the stuff that works, but I am always trying out new content and new activities. I have been lucky to receive so much support every year from teachers throughout our network of schools and the many institutions - museums, universities, and labs to name a few - in our great city. My newest interest is applying the Maker philosophy to science. I want my students to build solutions to problems like: How can electronics help us build better gardens? Can we track our health and develop healthy habits using technology? How can art inspire us to solve global warming?

My Project

I am a novice at the technology it takes to do work like this. That is why I want to return to the Deeper Learning conference. The mantra of the conference planners is to get students to "Create Beautiful Work" in every meaning of the phrase - aesthetically, socially, and scientifically. Last year, I was a facilitator on how to plan projects for English Language Learners. I also came away inspired by all of the amazing educators who came together to share their successes and challenges of creating authentic, meaningful, and frankly, deep learning for their students. Using technology to deepen student interest and motivate problem solving were themes throughout the workshops. I want to go back, this time as a participant, specifically to take workshops on robotics and circuitry and on the intersections of art and science. I know they will not just teach me how to use technology, but push my thinking on how technology can be used.

It takes a balance of so many factors to be a great teacher - inspired creativity, thoughtfulness, planning, constant incorporation of feedback, and a willingness to sometimes fail.

Most importantly, great teachers are great students. Deeper Learning 2015's focus on thoughtful uses of technology will teach me the skills that can inspire the evolution of my next great projects. Improving my craft will help me better teach students, and inspire them to also be life-long learners.
