My Students

My students are intelligent, caring, thoughtful children. The majority of them live in a massive housing project close by.

This housing area has a great deal of violence and poverty and thus is not always the safest of places for them to be in.

Many come to us from single-parent homes, foster homes, as well as homeless shelters. Some of our students live with grandparents, and many have a parent who has been or currently is incarcerated.

In spite of all this adversity and hardship, our student body is amazing. They come to school prepared and ready to learn each day and are always very excited to be with their friends and teachers to learn and grow in positive ways. They attend after school, play sports, and are involved in various community centers.

Our population is mostly African American with a small percentage of Hispanic students. Around 97% of our students participate in the free lunch program. Our students strive for excellence and many achieve just that.

My Project

The population of students that I work with are often in need of a tremendous amount of support. Often times, they are hyperactive and have an extremely difficult time following rules and regulations at school. They act out when they have to do class assignments and are then sent to me for support.

I want to have some new and innovative materials to work with my students this school year.

I want to give them every possible opportunity to be more successful at school by having better days. Many of them can do amazing work and are extremely bright and articulate. Too often, their days are difficult and frustrating as socially they have difficulties.

I want to get some weighted toys for them to relax with, a deep pressure vest to help calm frayed nerves, and sensory balls to hold and relax with when the pressure is unbearable. I feel that my students need specific materials to use when agitated. Since our school budget does not allow for these items to be purchased, I do hope that DonorsChoose.org might support us.

My students are amazing and kind hearted. When we work together one on one, they are an absolute delight. In the classroom where they feel lost, friendless, outnumbered, and bullied, they can act out horribly. With some special items, I might just be able to help these amazing children to have a better school year.
