Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our children are dreamers. They are eager and motivated to learn. They come from families who are hard-working, and they are teaching their children that same motivation for learning. Many of our families fall below the national poverty levels; some experiencing the situation of being homeless or are home insecure. In addition, English is a second language for the majority of our families or they are bilingual households.

Every child deserves a great start.

Our children deserve no less than great. Our children are getting ready for Kindergarten, and it is our job to prepare them! Having the right materials and devices is a large part of preparing students for school success!

My Project

Students living in poverty hear on average less words than their upper and middle class peers leading to a gap in knowledge of vocabulary. One way we know how to decrease the gap is reading and reading the same books repeatedly while talking about the vocabulary and part of books. For this exact reason my colleagues and I have decided to do a repeated read aloud of books; this involves reading the same book for one week. Each day we teach new vocabulary words connected to the story and the definitions, we have children pair up daily to discuss something about the book and at the end have a celebration of review where we celebrate all that we have learned; this may be a retell of the story or drawing a picture of our favorite part from the book.

A study on language acquisition found that children pick up new vocabulary quicker from repeated readings of the same book than when they encounter the same words in different new texts (Horst, Parsons & Bryan, 2011.).

This type of reading is going to help our English language learners as they will hear the same book multiple times and each time they have the opportunity to hear and learn something new about the story or a vocabulary word. We want our students to be prepared for Kindergarten and one way we need to do this is by increasing their vocabulary and book knowledge. The use of the this Repeated Read Aloud library I am seeking and cardstock for creating high quality vocabulary cards is going to help us achieve this goal.
