Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are incredible people. Most of them come from minority backgrounds and low-income homes. They are extremely talented in the arts, as they come to my school to specialize in art, business, marketing, and fashion design.

What makes my students so special is their kindness and support for each other.

They not only accept others for their differences, but they also embrace those differences and want to know most about cultures and life styles that differ from their own. One of my classes resolved not to eat breakfast in front of students who were fasting for Ramadan. In another instance, while on a field trip two of my students separated from the group to help a stranger carry her baby in a stroller down the subway steps.

My Project

Most of my students come from disadvantaged families who were hit hard by the Covid pandemic. Many lost parents, grandparents, siblings and other caretakers since they last left our school building in March, 2020. For them, coming back to in-person learning in September will be a difficult task to say the least.

My students need the inspiration and motivation to succeed in school now more than ever.

Many of them lost motivation to go to school and reported feelings of hopelessness about their futures during the pandemic. Providing a classroom space designed specifically for their comfort sends a powerful message - each student is valued, respected, and cared for as an individual who has the power to succeed.
