My Project

Education is finally pivoting in the right direction and realizing that kids need to be able to develop strong reading skills early in their education. For many years children have been taught to read through the cueing system, a system in which children use picture clues to help read basic text. What is being discovered is that older children do not truly understand how to decode new words with more complex phonics patterns. Because the cueing system has been used for so long in elementary schools, our classroom libraries are outdated and in need of decodable books.

We need to break the cycle of poor reading instruction, and provide students with quality decodable books to ensure that they are learning to decode and read.

These are the skills that are essential to their future as readers.

With the addition of decodable skill-based books, I will have the opportunity to provide my first graders with books that meet them at their individual decoding and reading levels. These new books would be placed in students' book bags so that when they are independently reading, they are reading texts that ensure they are able to decode an work on the skills they have learned in our phonics lessons.
