Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from every corner of the world. My students are all English Language Learners (ELLs), and are a microcosm of Queens: they speak over a dozen languages and come from more than 20 countries. The racial reckoning of the past year has been especially meaningful for them, as they are often subject to the effects of systemic and sometimes overt racism.

Like all young people, they are aware that race is important in our society with very real negative impacts on livelihoods and health.

They want to know about race and how it works, and I want them to have the science to support their exploration.

My Project

In this project, students will collect, purify, and amplify (making more copies of) their own DNA. We need your help for the next critical step: to send it to a local laboratory where it will be sequenced. Students will then analyze the sequence to determine their maternal ancestry and see how they are related to their classmates.

This is one of the most meaningful projects I teach as a Biology teacher and it becomes very personal for my students.

In the past, Mexican students have been amazed to find they are most closely related to Chinese students, Bengali students have discovered they are most like their Eastern European teacher, and different Dominican students have discovered how they are most similar to Native Americans or to Africans instead of other Dominicans.

Not only do they learn about cell biology, but they also learn to use biotechnology techniques to reveal how race is a social construct and not rooted in science. This grounds powerful conversations that break down the myth that race is destiny. Please help my students engage in this powerful work through real science!
