I'm the librarian of a Title I high school in the heart of the Mississippi Delta. Our student population consists of tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade students. All of our student body receives free lunch. Many are reluctant readers who read more than two levels below grade level. However, despite the obstacles they face, our students are curious and motivated to learn. They just need more tools to encourage them to do so. They are incredibly creative and talented kids who are determined to make their mark in the world.
Our goal for our students is to spark a love of reading. To begin this love affair, during our school's homeroom literacy period our students will read the novel Dear Martin--the story of a young, African American man headed towards an Ivy League education when his world is rocked by a tragic act of violence. We need additional copies of this book so that everyone can have their own. As we move through this novel study, we will explore the topics of race in modern America, police brutality, and civil disobedience through the lens of young people's experiences. By donating to this project, you are helping to spark an interest in reading; however, more than that you will be providing students an avenue to explore their own identities and important place in modern society. Students will also begin their own "Dear Martin" journals in order to process through the reading. This will build their abilities to synthesize and articulate important themes from the novel, while also helping them to develop their own unique voice.
