My Students

Our class is located in North East Los Angeles on a regular education campus that houses two Magnets schools as well. Our school has housed the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing program for over 20 years. We have three classrooms dedicated to our students from Preschoolers, age 3, to Fifth graders.

My students are Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing and mostly Latino.

They all communicate through American Sign Language. They are in grades: First, Second, and Third. All of them are behind in reading and writing, yet they are excited to come to school, to learn, and experience life. They are visual learners especially when it comes to communicating.

My Project

These seven Fire 8 HD tablets will be rotated among my nine students to provide them with access to the Technology they need to access my Google Classroom in the making. This Google Classroom will be filled with assignments that will be fully accessible to my Deaf students such as: videos of Read Alouds in American Sign Language (ASL) captioned in English, assignments given in ASL and English to assist in language development both orally and in American Sign Language as well as their written English, Parent resources such as Instructional Strategies in Language Arts and Math in English and Spanish as well as ASL lessons taught with Spanish voice overs.

This technology, Google Classroom, and Flipped Classroom will provide a REAL connection for families and Deaf students that live too far away from our school in North East Los Angeles and to each other.

These families want to be involved with their children's education but cannot afford the loss of time traveling on city buses for 90 minutes to 2 hours to arrive at our school. Many of my students are language deprived and only have full access to communication at school. These children need more than six hours of ASL and written English exposure to gain the skills necessary to be productive and contributing citizens in the 21st century.

This project is a beginning for many of my families to begin to learn ASL and communicate with their children beyond the superficial phrases "Do you have homework?" , "Are you hungry?", "Time to wash up and go to bed." Students will be able to converse with each other in ASL via Google Hangouts.

In the end, this Google Classroom and Tablets at Home for my Deaf students will help create a community at home and at school.
