My Students

My students come from a culturally and ethnically diverse borough of NYC, Queens. My school is identified as a Title 1 school, and more than half of the student population qualify for free or reduced school lunch. Their families' economic status is primarily low income. In some instances, some of my students provide economic contribution to their family's household or are raised by single parents. My students are passionate, enthusiastic, and bright in many areas; however, they lack access to essential tools to cater to their talents.

My Project

I am requesting for a variety of different coloring books and colored pencils to help my students become self-aware of their social and emotional needs to achieve well academically. High school could be a stressful time for many of my students as they are transitioning into the adult-world. In order for students to achieve well academically, they need to focus on their social and emotional development as well. We are creating a de-stress corner in our classroom that allows students to have the option to have a moment to "destress" when things are getting difficult. This is teaching them the importance of coping and self-care.
